FibroScan—also known as transient elastography—is a non-invasive, ultrasound-based test designed to evaluate liver health, particularly its stiffness (fibrosis) and fat content (steatosis).
How It Works
A special probe (transducer) is positioned on your skin over the liver.
It emits low-frequency vibrations (shear waves) and uses ultrasound to measure how fast they move through the liver.
Faster wave speeds suggest increased stiffness, which typically indicates more scarring (fibrosis).
It can also provide a CAP score (Controlled Attenuation Parameter) to quantify fat accumulation in the liver.
Usually takes 5–15 minutes.
Requires fasting for about 2–3 hours beforehand.
You lie down, expose your right upper abdomen, and the technician applies gel and places the probe. You may be asked to hold your breath for 10–15 seconds during measurements.
Benefits
Quick, painless, and safe — no needles or sedation.
Immediate results, enabling doctors to make prompt medical decisions.
Evaluates a much larger volume of liver tissue compared to a biopsy, making it more representative.
Effective for diagnosing and monitoring conditions like:
Fatty Liver (NAFLD/NASH)
Chronic hepatitis B & C
Alcohol-related liver disease
Patients with significant inflammation, biliary obstruction, tumors, or congestive heart failure, which can skew stiffness readings.
There’s also a small chance of false elevation of stiffness due to these conditions.

Offer FibroScan?
Wellsun Medicity is a renowned multi-specialty hospital in Lucknow with around 200 beds, advanced facilities in cardiology, renal sciences, interventional care, and transplant services.
However, their official information does not specifically list FibroScan or liver elastography among the services.
What is FibroScan? : A non-invasive liver test using ultrasound to assess stiffness and fat.
Procedure: Quick, painless, with fasting and breath-holds.
Benefits : Safe, instant results, broader sample than biopsy.
Limitations : Less accurate in obesity, ascites, inflammation, etc.
